Native of the region of the Saguenay, Lake Saint-Jean, to Quebec, Jean-François Lapointe devoted himself to the singing since the age of sixteen years, after having studied the piano and the violin. He worked under the direction of Louise André in the Laval university of Quebec, where he got a Mastery in Interpretation, before improving in United States next to Martial Singher. He is titular of many prices, of which three to the prestigious Concours International de chant de Paris.

Since his beginnings on stage at the age of seventeen years, Jean-François Lapointe sang more than sixty roles in the main musical capitals of the world.
Very appreciated in the importants roles of the lyric baritone repertory, he became famous by his interpretations of the title role of Hamlet of Thomas Ambroise, in Copenhagen, Trieste and Geneva, and of Mercutio, Roméo et Juliette in Cincinnati, Orange and Tokyo. He also embodied over and over again the role of Valentin Faust, in Turin, Madrid, Monte-Carlo, as well as to Orange in August 2008. One was also able to hear to interpret it lately Albert's role Werther in the Théatre de la Monnaie in Brussels.

Otherwise, Jean-François Lapointe doesn't hesitate to invest in opéras more rarely played. He participated for example in the French creation of the Candide of Bernstein, while interpreting his title role in France and in tour through Europe. He also brought his contribution to the re-creation of Mârouf, savetier du Caire, to the opera of Marseille, as well as to the production of La Jolie fille de Perth in Compiègne (France.) A registration of this spectacle is available, as well as of his performance in Fieramosca, in the Benvenuto Cellini of Berlioz, recorded in the label Radio France under the direction of John Nelson.

Rented by the critique for his scenic ease and his comedian's qualities, he makes in addition to a lot off incursions in the operetta, interpreting the roles of Brissac ,les Mousquetaires au couvent, in particular in Toulouse, le Vice roi du Pérou la Périchole in Marseille and in Nancy and especially of Danilo, La veuve Joyeuse in Montreal, Bordeaux, Liege or Lausanne.

Finally, so Jean-François Lapointe is especially research to interpret the French repertory, he doesn't disregard for as much the Italian or Russian repertory: one was able thus to hear to sing it, Figaro, Le Barbier de Seville to the opera-comedy, as well as the Conte Almaviva, Les Noces de Figaro to Nancy and Don Giovanni in Trieste. During thes last season 2009/2010, Jean-François Lapointe made beginnings outstanding in the roles of Fortunio, Falstaff in Paris and in june 2010 Enée, Didon et Enée Pucell's, in the Lausanne's opéra and Vichy too. But his role fetish remained Pelléas, that he sang as well in North America (among others in Toronto and Cincinnati) that in Europe: he was for example the Pelléas of Yannis Kokkos in Bordeaux and Toulouse and it is to interpret this role that he has been invited in the Scala of Milan in November 2005. At the same time as his scenic career , Jean-François Lapointe occurs regularly in concert, both in the field of the oratorio and in that of the melody : he is a renowned interpreter of Duparc, Fauré and Poulenc. He moreover recorded two CD of french's melodies, appeared at Analekta: the first one is dedicated to the poems of Verlaine put in music by Reynaldo Hahn, Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy and also the Quebecker André Mathieu; the second CD includes Ernest Chausson's melodies with the famous Poem de l'amour et de la mer in its original version with piano and of Henri Duparc. For some years, Jean-François Lapointe also dedicates himself to the direction of orchestra and assured Master's Classes.
